All of us in Project Management roles struggle daily with setting and managing expectations for our teams. Keeping projects on track – especially with constant change requests and additions, is a project manager's greatest challenge. Here is a helpful and quick list of 11 tips to keep a project on time and on budget.
- Get involved early (during the planning process).
- Involve all stakeholders, especially IT.
- Have a clear project scope with sign-off -- and set priorities.
- Be realistic.
- Make sure everyone (including senior management) understands his or her role and responsibilities.
- Make sure team members communicate with each other.
- Try to identify potential pain points.
- Set up calendar reminders for milestones.
- Have an escalation strategy.
- Hold regular status meetings -- and set up reminders to ensure everyone attends.
- Don't be afraid to communicate bad news -- and adjust expectations.
