11 Project Management Tips for Setting and Managing Expectations

All of us in Project Management roles struggle daily with setting and managing expectations for our teams. Keeping projects on track – especially with constant change requests and additions, is a project manager's greatest challenge. Here is a helpful and quick list of 11 tips to keep a project on time and on budget.

  1. Get involved early (during the planning process).
  2. Involve all stakeholders, especially IT.
  3. Have a clear project scope with sign-off -- and set priorities.
  4. Be realistic.
  5. Make sure everyone (including senior management) understands his or her role and responsibilities.
  6. Make sure team members communicate with each other.
  7. Try to identify potential pain points.
  8. Set up calendar reminders for milestones.
  9. Have an escalation strategy.
  10. Hold regular status meetings -- and set up reminders to ensure everyone attends.
  11. Don't be afraid to communicate bad news -- and adjust expectations.
