Scheduling mode determines how tasks react to change of one of 3 elements:
- Units
- Effort
- Duration
This is a familiar topic for those who use Microsoft Project as scheduling modes exist there as well. There is major difference in how Microsoft Project uses scheduling mode vs. Project for the Web. Microsoft Project can have a different scheduling mode at the task level. The Scheduling mode in Project for the Web is set at the project level.
You may be asking yourself what does this mean. In Project for the Web if you set the scheduling mode to Fixed Duration, the entire project will use that mode. Whereas in Microsoft Project you could have tasks with Fixed Duration, Effort or Units on various tasks in a single project.
You cannot change the scheduling mode for a project in Project for the Web once you set it. The admin sets the default scheduling mode and decides if project managers can change it in the Project Parameter settings.
This video demonstrates where to change the scheduling mode, as well as it's affect on your project.
