How to Edit a Connection String in Excel PowerPivot

The functionality in Excel’s PowerPivot is wonderful. My favorite is the ability to add columns that contain functions, and I use this frequently for client reports.

So, this is all great.  New functionality, happy clients . . . however, when I create a powerpivot data model that overlays the pivot table I display, I can no longer edit my data connection in the pivot table! This is an issue whenever I want to add a new column from the database, add hard-coded filters, etc.

Here’s where it’s hiding.  Open the PowerPivot. Click on the Design tab and select Table Properties.

Your connection string will appear in edit-able format. Modify, save and enjoy!
