What is Microsoft Roadmap?
The newly released Microsoft Roadmap provides an easy, interactive dashboard to display project information across the portfolio.
Who doesn’t like the quick look and feel of a dashboard? I was very excited to explore what this new feature had to offer!
What Can You Do?
The Microsoft Roadmap can connect to Project Online and Azure Boards.
Once you have created the connection to your Project Online environment, you can bring in a few high-level project and task details into your Roadmap. Tasks are not automatically populated and will need to be added individually. This allows you to choose which tasks you think are the most appropriate to view. The project name, task name, and task start and finish dates are available to add.
If you want to open the details of a task you have added in Project Online, you can click directly on the link of the Connection and it will take you to the project details page in PWA.
Using Microsoft Roadmap
You can mark the status for items on your Roadmap as Not set, On track, At risk, High risk, and Done. These statuses on your Roadmap are separate from how they are labeled in PWA.
You also can change the Owner of the project. As with the status field, this change will only live in your Roadmap and will not be updated in Project Online.
As the current vision for Roadmap is to view key details across the portfolio, the ability to modify certain aspects, such as start/end dates and task progress tracking, are not built into the functionality.
You are given the option to create your own project (or row) to display on your Roadmap, however, you cannot add tasks to it unless it is connected to Project Online or Azure Boards. I am looking forward to seeing if adding your own tasks only on the Roadmap is an addition Microsoft makes in the future!
Where is my Microsoft Roadmap stored?
I found the Roadmap currently stored in my personal OneDrive for Business. If you have shared the plan with other Members, the Roadmap will be stored in their OneDrive for Business as well.
Sharing your Microsoft Roadmap
You can create a Roadmap for your personal use, or you can share it with others.
Only the Roadmap owner can invite members to their board. The new members will receive an email stating that a new Roadmap has been shared with them.
How Do I Know if Microsoft Roadmap is Available in my Environment?
The availability of this feature depends on the feature update channel of your Project Online environment. Ask your Admin to check your current feature updates channel! Our previous blog post provides details how to update.
Depending on your feature update channel, your Admin may be able to enable the feature for Microsoft Roadmap in your Project Online environment.
