Shire is one of the world’s leading specialty pharmaceutical companies and has experienced rapid growth through the development of medicines to help people with life-altering conditions. The Shire human genetic therapies (HGT) division, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focuses specifically on treatments for rare diseases. Because of their growth rate, expertise and focus, Shire HGT has numerous R&D and capital expansion efforts and requires strong tools for management oversight and project efficiency.

What We Needed to Solve

Required One, Integrated solution for Managing All Projects

The Shire HGT group had previously used Oracle’s Primavera EPM solution for capital projects, Microsoft Project for research and development, and Excel-based tools for smaller projects. Clients of the project controls group, including 160 users managing over 200 projects worth more than $300 million, needed one integrated, enterprise-wide system that would allow visibility into division-wide schedules and resources.

For added complexity, the research group was embarking on many smaller projects and needed to streamline project controls. It was clear that the current solutions were not meeting the division’s needs.They identified key criteria for the new project management software solution, which included ease-of-implementation and in-house knowledge. Microsoft Project Server met these criteria as many clients and program managers at Shire were familiar with the solution. Shire sought the help of experts to drive full implementation and training.
